you go girl lol. Nothing like rescuing a neglected rose. And if the freesias come with it, well that's a bonus. In saying that, roses have been known to thrive with neglect lol. If it's a carpet rose, it will take a hammering and can been pruned with hedge cutters
I have been known to prune them with the lawnmower 
I was thinking hydrangeas would do well in pots there. And they would be bushy enough to fill the gaps and not look small and silly.
