Yes, it is the common advisory. But aquarium keepers have used peace lilies for years as one of the plant choices for the top layer of a bio filter set up, roots in the tank, foliage above, without issue. That is how I learned about water culture and adapted it for most of my indoor plants. They seem to adapt easily and survive well. My big peace lily is now in its third year with no problems.
I also grow pothos hybrids, philodendrons, dracaena, and a couple of other species the same way. And some of those are seriously big plants now. I'm trialing an orchid now, for the fun of it. It was a rescue, well on the way out but has new root tips and is looking very healthy. I have my fingers crossed for flowers...
