However, in relatively recent western history (the past 150-ish years), the rich and powerful have surprisingly decided to all start being "nice & kind" and to play by the rules etc., so they no longer use political assassinations as a means to acquire or maintain power.

I would like to think it was more to do with the establishment of formal law enforcement agencies with investigative skills and real world consequences for murderers...  rather than the rich and powerful simply deciding to be nice and kind...

Other point is the population of the planet has grown rapidly over the last couple of centuries, too many people in one place is never a good outcome...
