Why is NZ doing so much better than most?

One of the things I was intent to avoid as I aged was my parents and grandparents reliance on drugs for all manner of complaints, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, calcium etc etc. I was inclined to think their GPs were a little too free with their scripts...

Now I teeter on the brink of the big seven oh, I haven't changed my opinion.

We live longer than we are designed to do, courtesy of a bunch of chemicals. I don't know that it is such a good thing...

Which then begs the question of how much is the 'need' for the ever increasingly 'shiny new drug' a result of the latest and greatest farming and food processing input along with the ever faster and more affluent lifestyle we are all made to consider as normal?
