And yet, they still want to return to this foolishness...another good reason not to let them anywhere near power.

three strikes clearly hasn't worked but I do feel there is still a need for some kind of escalating penalty for repeat offenders - maybe the sentence imposed is increased by 50% for each subsequent strike or some such, so 10 year minimum becomes 15 year minimum next time, 20 years after that etc...

Well with all these shootings in Auckland, something needs to be done.
Labour certainly appear to have been light on gangs, and national keeps campaigning how they will go tough on gangs and crime, yet they too have nothing to show for it when they were in power.
Keeping people in prison costs money too, so perhaps other ways to rehabilitate offenders, particuarly young and first time offenders may help.
Some countries use military style boot camps, etc.
Perhaps something like this should be explored here too.

Thing is, we all know punishment is not a deterrent, it simply makes us feel better. If we want to lower crime rates we need to look at the root causes, not the end results. Remove the motivation to commit crimes before they happen, not whack these people with sticks when the deed is well done.

We somehow prefer not to start with causes, possibly because its far more complex & difficult, can't be done in five minutes & doesn't involve harsh punishment. And ,of course it would mean that some wouldn't get that sense of satisfaction from whacking someone.
We could learn a lot from looking at other countries which are getting better results, especially in lowering the rate of recidivism.
Of all places to copy methods from, the USA should always have been last; theirs is a very cruel system particularly when it comes to their over use of solitary confinement - they're well aware it causes insanity when over used, yet continue to do so.

Yes, they need to learn how to use guns in the correct manner, some training along those lines would help for sure.

Lol, I like that a lot foal!
Interesting seeing this very debate point come up on The Nation this morning, with one candidate for Auckland's top job hitting the punish them button while the other had obviously thought about it a whole lot more.
I can pretty much guarantee he won't get the job, and not just because I voted for him.

Very well put!
I think almost all of our political parties, if one was to apply close scrutiny over the past few decades, might have things which would give them pause.
But the 'getting tough' is apparently the go to stance for those on the right whenever there's an election within cooee, & the favourite targets are invariably criminals & beneficiaries. Which really tells most of us all we need to know about those parties.

Fantastic Opportunity:
The Public would like a Political Party to GET TOUGH ON CRIME by asset stripping then deporting those found guilty of manipulating our Electorate System
The PROCEEDS OF CRIMINAL Behavior shall be distributed through the wider community
