Bad driving
#1
Because I looked at Stuff in relation to the other thread I posted on, I also found this https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/13121234...ivers-test.

If people have a problem keeping up with road code knowledge then regular testing might help, but the problems quoted are things that every driver knows. Jumping red lights, texting while driving, crossing the centre line, passing on the inside, and so on, are all basic wrongs. The author's proposal for testing wouldn't help one iota. It's attitude that is the problem and always has been. Implementing testing just makes another huge cost on the innocent instead of hitting the guilty. More fines for transgressions would help get money into the public coffers and make the roads safer.

We don't need testing. Unfortunately we need enforcement.

If licence renewal was regular and based on education and testing, then there would be an opportunity to retrain idiot drivers. I have never understood why a drivers licence was issued for life without the opportunity to test, until we achieved grand old age. Most old age drivers are far more aware and cautious than middle aged drivers..

After all, they have less but more precious to loose!  Big Grin

I think testing every time you renew your license would be a great idea.
I bet that many would fail on at least one question.

Testing with licence renewal would inform those whose memories have lost some of the rules into the backblocks of their brains, but would be hugely expensive and would not solve the attitude problem. The problems we have on the roads are all things that everyone knows are wrong, but they do it anyway. If people started actually following the rules, everyone's driving experience would be a lot safer and more efficient. Do you really want your licence renewal to cost hundreds of dollars because others choose to deliberately break the rules?
