I purchased 2 lounge chairs from Harvey Norman to replace my old and worn out sofa, the price was steep enough but what got me was the fee for delivering the chairs and taking away my old sofa $200 bloody dollars and I only live about 15 minutes away by car, bloody ripoff merchants!!!
Rant over.

I know someone who complained about that last year - I offered to help with my trailer, but she would have none of that.

I just might complain as well, if I had a towbar and a trailer I would have done it myself, it just makes me so mad that big companies are greedy to make money off the little people

How much do you think it costs, to deliver the new, and take away and dispose of the old?

That would annoy me as well - that's an outright rip off & I'd be telling everyone I know & never buying from them again.
I've heard that lot called 'Hardly Normal' & perhaps that's why.
in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)

Do you expect the company to deliver free of charge? They would simply build the cost into their prices and every customer would be paying for everyone's deliveries. That seems fair enough to me but not everyone shares my socialist views.

I got rid of my Lazyboys, they were wrecking my spine. But they weren't electric lol.
They were too big for me to shove so I sold them on TM for $5 each. Gone like a flash. Pick up only. Problem solved. Then I bought nice solid cane chairs to replace. Easy to move, nice and upright, can't slouch in these!
Gotta love TM...

No way did I expect them to deliver and take away free of charge but an 8k 11 min drive and a price of $200 is a bit steep in my opinion especially after spending more than a few thousand on chairs.

I agree it seems excessive but surely you knew about this upfront - you could have arranged your own transport for them?

Large retailers are constantly offering big limited period discounts, 'free' making on curtains, "we will pay the GST/ute tax", 24/36 month interest free and all manner of 'great deals' but they have to recoup those hits on their bottom line from somewhere so it comes down to being very wary of potential added costs.
The adage of 'if a deal seems too good to be true it probably isn't' comes into play so a case of buyer beware applies for any purchase where delivery, warranty add-ons, T&Cs apply, or discontinued model/line are in play. In the case of HN I believe the sales staff are employed on a commission basis so the added motivation to 'close a deal' puts another level of caution into the purchase for a customer.

That company also has a well earned rep of resisting consumer guarantees warranty claims until the customer gives up in frustration...

We bought a new lounge suite for our moving into the retirement village in December. It was from the Lazyboy shop in Napier. Spitting distance to our new place. Deliver only $100. Bought a Lazy-boy electric recliner from Hardley Normal in Hastings, 15K away. Was going to cost $80 to deliver. Rang son and he whipped round in his work ute and took it home for us and assembled it.
Nothing is cheap today, we are having a Stratco awning and a trellis for our deck, and fly screens made for ranchslider and front door. Adds up to a tad under $10,000. I'm sure it didn't cost that much when we moved into our previous home 28yrs ago!

On the other hand there is someone laughing at how cheap the $200 delivery fee was...a freight company would have charged twice that !

My three cane chairs were across Auckland, miles away from me and so I googled for men with vans, and came across a site that allowed me to describe the job for operators to bid on. I listed my needs along with a link to the auction and sure enough bids for pick up and delivery started to come in.
They started a bit OMG so I waited, and waited, and slowly but surely the bids came down over 24 hours and I ended up accepting one that was under half the first bid that came in. We arranged times, addresses, and I paid up front, and the whole business ran as smoothly as anyone could have wished.
I would happily do that again anytime.
