There's going to be some serious questions asked about how this came about. A ship designed for hydrographic surveying will have a lot of the most modern and high tech sonar and other navigational equipment. There should be no way it would run aground other than by human error. Heads should roll!

But then we have the coalition of ideological strategies and inability to take responsibility for their policies so I'm not holding my breath on the whole story seeing the light of day any time soon, unless they choose to somehow blame it on Labour

Yes it does seem a mysterious event considering the navigation gear they probably have present as it was recently refitted.

It went down on fire as well which is also a bit strange.

Could it be the usual story of crew members in charge having a tipple and not paying sufficient attention to what was happening to the ship or even worse being overcome by grog and asleep at the wheel??? LOL.

This is essentially another Rena disaster albeit with a much smaller ship but the risks of an oil spill will still be high.
This is quite an embarrassment for the NZ government.

I see she has storage capacity for over 1.1 million litres of marine oil (diesel) so likely to result in quite a significant spillage depending on how full she was when she sunk.

For a ship that was suppose to be getting up close and personal with a reef, I would have thought watertight compartments might be useful...

"We bought Manawanui knowing she was not a war ship, she's a commercial operation... but with that comes a risk and the risk is that commercial vessels do not have the same level of redundancy in their systems or their design that warships do - you can't seal off compartments, create water tight compartments and keep the vessel afloat so that it can be towed, salvaged and repaired.
"Unfortunately with commercial vessel of this type, you know that in a worst case situation you're going to have an issue but I guess no one anticipated that she'd hit a reef."

When The Powers That Be are so blase about risk mitigation it really is cause for concern when they intend to push through initiatives with real environmentally negative potential by way of the Fast Track bill.
