yesss!  Bless our dads who thought their daughters needed to know that sort of stuff.  My dad was the same, no excuses for not having a go.  When I bought my first car I had to change the rear tyres to the front.  And to celebrate my first car purchase he bought me a wheel brace lol.  He had even marked which bit would fit my car

My step father wouldn't teach me to drive until I could change the wheels around and do general maintenance too.

I came top of the class in Metalwork cos My stepfather taught me heaps..

True. I just hope I dont end up like Fanny my friend from Taranaki.. She is just lazy. She uses nappies rather than having to walk to the toilet. 
She can walk perfectly fine, she just doesn't like to miss out on anything. I told her she's ruining her own bladder cos she will get to the stage of having no control

Beautiful sunshine, blue sky day and very still. Nice to look out at as I go through the tissues battling a head cold ... lol,  it's been a while since I had one! Blimin winter ailments ... I hear there's tummy bugs about as well.

Another who was capable with tools growing up ... if you want the job done ... learn how. 

Will trundle outside later and water a few plants to keep them growing.  Otherwise no plan to expend too much energy today. I have knitting and books at hand.

I was complaining on farcebook about my last power bill, and a gentleman suggested I check the usage and pointed out if my ancient (1965!!) hw cylinder was not working properly it could account for a 50% increase in kwh s used. So, I checked. Previous months under 200. Last month 352...

Plumber call being organised by the landlords. And I sorted out the hot water cupboard stash. To save my blushes when a strange man is pawing through my nighties!

And that explains why the water has been so hot lately. Gods, some days I am just so stupid...

That's good news Hunni, hopefully it brings down the dreaded power bill - just paid mine earlier.
It really does annoy me,that every damned year the prices go up. Again. Just before winter, the miserable sods.

I wasn't really taught much in the way of fixing things; but I was taught to shoot.

Standard practice back then for country kids, although I didn't hear of any other girls who were taught.

Coming back from a quick visit to get one or two things, a middle aged woman said how good it was that I can still ride a bike. At my age.

Of course, it was only well down the road when i thought of a suitable reply  - I should have yelled "I'm only 35!"

Your electricity bill has gone up because all the delivery charges have been increased majorly and so are the Low User Charges being increased every month for the next two years as the concession prices are phased out.

You will be paying more for ancillaries than for the actual electricity you use.

Nah, the usage is actually 50% higher this past month with the same use habits, so those expected extras are exacerbated by a faulty cylinder.

I've been whinging about delivery costing more than product for months, it's just getting worse. Oh for the days when I paid $50 a month, in mid winter!

I Loved it and would go to small bore rifleling ( SP) with my father cos he was a good shot too.

When we lived in Kaiangaroa the Boys didn't believe that I loved shooting and was a good shot. So I got me a gun... and went out hunting with them. Did any of them hit anything Nope... I got a pig in the shoulder, the worst spot really cos their shoulder blades are really tough. We followed him for ages..

They still didn't believe me so off we went to the dump.. and had a shooting contest... they shut up after that.

Learnt on the farm where we all migrated to for the Christmas holidays. Tin cans on fence posts lol.

Another Back in the day Boy thing was rugby. I would go to training with my brothers and they let me train with the teams but of course wasn't allowed to play.

At college here in 79=80ish we begged to be allowed to play rugby, the only concession was Indoor Soccer.. The Boys thinking they had it won before they even turned up. Sadly we only played one game.. We were too rough on them... There were walls for running them into, they didn't like that lol OOPS.

They took all but the bin they wouldn't take last time in the inorganic. Ill have to get rid of it via bags.

Planted the passionfruit, Dug the ground with a hammer and screwdriver cos the Blardy padlock has rusted on the shed with the garden tools and Hacksaw in.. lol.. Paul will come in and grind it off for me.

But its in the ground so fingers crossed it will grow.

Cylinders don't go faulty like that, the insulation is a permanent feature which doesn't change, the thermostat maybe on all the time in which case you would see water coming out of the overflow pipe and running into the gutters onto your roof.

The old cylinders are better than the new ones it's not true that the insulation on the old cylinders is that much worse, these days they are built very poorly.

I have been into the factory where they make the cylinders from scratch here in CHCH and the standards are very low.

If your water is very much hotter than usual then it may be that the thermostat is reaching the end of it's life and has altered calibration, 1965 is quite old. The earthquakes here destroyed many a hot water cylinder, big leaks, including my new one and adding chlorine to the water to stop contaminated water (mud from broken pipes) caused pinhole faults in the copper linings, had to replace the cylinders again, good business for the plumbers here.

Quite old indeed, and probably thermostat or wiring, seeing it's using too much power. probably heating constantly. Either way it needs replacing, it's well past its use by date. As are we all...

Im kinda dreading my first powerbill. 

My water bill however is quite low compared to the last house.. Mind you at the last house I never found the meter. I never knew how they figured out the bill.

60 years  pretty good run for cylinder OHH but be good to get more efficient one 

Filled in at warehouse yesterday then spen afternoon starting to cut out my sewing project for sewing weekend next week.

Off to watch DGS play soccer this morning will have time to do a quick whip around clean the kitchen and bathrooms.

Lunch with family  then back to more prep got to apply interfacingand cut out ling

morning ladies We have another pea souper out there, you can't see across the road.

Our hot water cylinder is dated 1959 Even our plumber was impressed and took photos for the plumber's FB page where they brag about the oldest cylinder found lol. Our cylinder is the next thing to be replaced once we have sorted out paying for the pump. We're looking at a heat pump style hot water system. Our power bill is looking at being around $220 this month. There is two of us though. The heat pump and dryer have only been used occasionally so we suspect it is the hot water making it so high. The sooner we can sort out the hot water, the better.

There is half a garden to be weeded and the last of the pruning to do once the fog has cleared. It won't take long to do.

MrK received another two letters from the hospital yesterday. One for the photo shoot of his bladder and the best one, for the orthopedic clinic for his back and hip. It has only taken a year pretty much to the day to get this appointment and in the meantime, he has been in so much pain. The drugs he has had to take knock him senseless and out cold. It's been a terrible year for him. Hopefully something can finally be done.

I'm over halfway through the hardanger Am over it lol but will keep going and finish it. It's my late afternoon thing when I rest for a bit. The sun streams in and I stitch.

Wow km! Your cylinder beats mine! I would love one of those heat pump models, I checked them out a while back when my savings account was fat, but I blew it on the scoot lol, and I doubt the landlords have enough imagination to go that sensible. We'd save a lot of money over a year with one of those...

Morning everyone

We have a real pea souper today. Don't have fog often but when we do, we do a good job of it lol.

Ill be going to have a wander around the recycle center shop this morning. Pick up a couple of things so I can bake tomorrow.

Then Ill carry on with the boxes in the bedrooms. Was hoping to get David to take his oven and huge crate home yesterday but he asked if he could come back and get it. So Ill work around them again.

Then Ill decide and measure out ingredients to power-bake tomorrow.

Our hot water system is a heat pump one, Econergy.  https://www.econergy.co.nz

It's hard to compare the cost with our previous system because we are now in a much colder town and also we now have underfloor heating (also a heat pump system).   But Consumer continues to rate Econergy highly and I recommend it based on our nearly nine years experience of it.    It did cost more than a conventional hot water system but only by about $1K.
