Gmail set up
#1
I have gmail set up on my Android phone as well as on my PC using Outlook 2019.  They can both send and receive mails without issues.

But one thing annoys me is the synching:  when I delete an email from the Android phone , it also deletes from my Outlook 2019.

How do I set it up so that it works independently? like, any deletion will not affect the other?

Is it possible, at all?

I remember it was working OK when I set it up about a year ago when Xtramail stopped it's free email service.

Only lately I noticed that something isn't quite right when I deleted some emails from the phone and those mails also were deleted from my Outlook 2019.

It's annoying. Could it be the Microsoft Windows Link is doing the annoying trick?

The Default setup for Gmail is saved as IMAP (.ost) files. To possibly save on PC you would need to set it up as a POP Account (.pst) file.

Have a look at the Picture explains how it works. From Memory you have to change settings on gmails ( web page) to allow .pst.

With IMAP they sync, so what happens on one device repeats on all with the same account.

depends how you have it setup on the PC...

Phones are usually always setup with IMAP so it syncs all the mail server folders - full sync

PCs might be setup with either POP or IMAP

If its IMAP, then it will sync the mail server folders - as with the phone a full sync - delete from one deletes everywhere...

Now, IF the PC is set up with POP (ONLY looks in the inbox on the server and downloads only new messages), it behaves differently.
If you delete on the phone before the PC gets a chance to download the new message, it is gone from the server so the PC can never download it.
If you delete on the PC, then what happens to the copy on the mail server depends on the Outlook settings, it might do nothing, or it might remove from server after X number of Days, or it can remove from the server only when its deleted on the PC

Usually the behaviour you describe might be from
POP: deleting on the phone BEFORE the PC has a chance to download the message
IMAP: expected behaviour, if you delete on one device, it will remove from the server, and subsequently delete from other IMAP enabled devices
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

I'm having issues with emails for my Gmail address not progressing beyond Mailwasher. Seems they are failing to transfer through to Thunderbird. No changes on my end but issue started happening yesterday. I initially thought it was a corrupt attachment to a Council email (building inspection) which was then blocking the queue but with that email sourced by another method (and the one in MW deleted) the same thing is happening to other emails to my Gmail address. Any suggestions?

did thunderbird do an update recently? check the apps list in settings for the install date...

had a client with a similar issue with their hotmail account earlier in the week.  Worked fine in the Outlook (New) app when I tried it, but couldn't get it to go in thunderbird.  I got the feeling TB may have put out a buggy release...

I'm running TB Version 128.10.0esr (64 bit). Last update was May 2 and it's only in the past couple of days that the problem has occurred.

now if i recall correctly mailwasher just acts as a separate email client connecting via imap to the mail server, prior to you actually opening your normal email client that then collects the modified mail from the same server.

So if everything is working correctly in Mailwasher one might assume it is simply an issue with thunderbird.

From a testing point of view I would be trying to setup another instance of thunderbird on another PC or another user profile on your pc to confirm if it can be setup correctly. Trying in another mail app would also be useful from a what works, what doesn't work perspective.

couple of side notes...
There is a version 138 of TB in the standard release channel as well that might be worth an update to.

I just tried a setup of my gmail account in MW and all went as expected but note on the OAUTH signin screen google now has a second tick box to select to approve ongoing authority to access the account, otherwise it (authority to access the google account) is revoked after 6 months. first time i've seen that...

I have noticed similar things in the past with windows updates, I suspect that during the install process, before it restarts that it leave certain functions that it is updating inoperable until it restarts and can finish the install.

Or it was simply the restart that did it, that alone fixes an awful lot of niggles. Good its back up and running...
