Mmmm, choppers are noisy and a pain. Living near the naval base means we get a few more than just the usual, and we are under the flight path to the city chopper base, and the Auckland Hospital one, so we are sort of used to them. But they are a pain. Part of city living I'm afraid.

One thing though, when my niece opened her salon in an expensive part of town I asked her why she picked that, the rent must've been high. But as she pointed out her best clients flew in by helicopter, and ubered to her place to get their weekly $500 shampoo and blow wave so that took care of the rent...

She retired at 30. Not silly that one, lol...

I think some people quite enjoy showing off how wealthy they are, and paying through the nose is one way of doing that. Restaurants. Weddings. Designer clothes. Fastest imported cars. Champagne by the carton in the New World trolley, we see that here in Devonport often enough.

I will say though, not only was she regularly overbooked, in a salon in a very pricey area, she had two apprentices as well. Having done her training over four years in one of Ponsonby's top salons including a six week finishing block in a salon in Paris, she knew the value of on the floor training v a certificate from one of the big schools. And that is where she picked up most of her long term clients. Inheritance, lol. No doubt her apprentices had that same benefit if they went out on their own.

And no one is holding a gun to the heads of these clients, nor is it a scam. They were regulars, so if they were being ripped off it was their informed choice. Funny thing about women and their hairdressers, it only takes one bad experience to never go back...

Taken advantage of? LOL what?

Rich people like paying top dollar because it makes them feel superior to everyone else anyway.

Exactly. Like being seen on social media. And we not only enjoy it, we actively support and celebrate that lifestyle habit. So, though it might be unhealthy - like hypochondria in a way, it only exists because it satisfies some kind of need. In both players, and audience.

At one time, when i was still quite young, I might have found highly priced hair care, overpriced clothes, houses, cars etc. impressive.

But now having lived a life & learned a bit it just seems bizarre & incomprehensible. Unless perhaps those people have masses of wealth but no self worth & therefore feel compelled to constantly display that at the very least, they're wealthier than most of us.

The reality though is that in every other way, they're far poorer than most of us. So much so that it's almost possibe to feel sorry for them. Almost.

Exactly - which is why I think it might be a good move to have an income ceiling, & floor, so no one has way too much & no one has way too little.

Makes sense to me. Tax the billionaires!
You know, the ones that exploit and get rich from other's hard work, and do none themselves...

You know, if the ones currently studiously avoiding or evading tax just paid up at the same rate as the average worker did, without fibbing or hiding or getting clever, we would all be so much better off.

I just got my IRD assessment, and once again I underpaid by $4.48 and that was written off. Two things, why write it off, I'm happy to pay the bit extra, and second I was really proud that I still pay tax. On top of all that gst that I never take into account.

Why is it not a matter of pride for all of us, that we pay towards the ongoing business that is the country's economy? Maybe we need a campaign to change the way we regard taxes...

Yes - greed seems to be one of our worst characteristics. Luckily,we also have a few good ones... Wink

You're absolutely right, it should be a thing of pride to be helping each other, & I'm damned if I understand why it isn't - why wouldn't someone want to help others out if they can fgs.

Like that African football player  Sadio Mane, who made a fortune playing footy Someone asked why he didn't have a Ferrari or several, he replied that he preferred to instead set up a school & a hospital in his village.
I do not get why anyone wouldn't prefer to help if they can.
