Having spent a few days in China with a (US born) interpreter that understood local issues intimately and as a result it was made apparent to us that the CCP maintains its control over the near 1.5 billion Chinese population to a large degree by way of convincing them that China has the largest, strongest, fastest, most tech advanced of whatever thing that information spouted to them relates to. Any conflicting information is well censored, or banned, in order to maintain the facade. That is how you keep a 1.5B population consisting of numerous ethnic backgrounds under cohesive government.

That said the Chinese governmental strategy also works on a centuries scaled timescale rather than the parlimentary or presidential patchwork of other countries. From their perspective the last couple of centuries of Anglo American dominance is little more than a temporary blip in their progress towards dominance of world affairs.

And yes Trump is puny and disorganised on multiple levels.

I don't agree with the anti China rhetoric in the media at the moment. So long as we side with the US, led by an adjudicated sexual predator, criminal fraudster, liar, and serial misogynist, supporter of anti democratic political violence, frankly China looks positively moral in comparison.

I know who I'd feel more comfortable having treaty alliances with...

I doubt whether the military of all southern hemisphere nations combined would come close to matching the US  or China - perhaps Russia

Maybe we don't need to match militaries. Just work together, and favour each other over the northern military powers. We dance to their tune in everything. It's time we grew up and start recognising we live different lives, in different climates, with different needs and objectives. We are the new world, they are the old.

That might work - but i doubt our lot would do that. We've been drawn into wars before.

Yes. But the ones who agree to join wars aren't the ones who put their lives on the line. We need a defence force, but one with an active mission to make peace, not war. To be trained with that in mind, to be supplied with that in mind, and deployed with that in mind. To save lives, not risk them.

THAT would make good sense - possibly it's only flaw. Which almost certainly means it will never happen, dammit.

And perhaps the idiots who agree to join wars should be obliged to be first in line...
