Uvalde shooting & Matthew McConaughey
#1
Its always a pleasant surprise to see someone in the public eye trying to do some good; in this instance change the dire gun laws in America. It must have taken some courage to voice his views there & I hope his career doesn't suffer because of it.

And by the way - he writes a damned good book too. Green Lights is excellent.

Matthew McConaughey made an emotional plea for US lawmakers to pass gun control legislation during an appearance at the White House on Tuesday, where he urged Congress to “reach a higher ground”.

The Academy Award–winning actor called for bolstering background checks for gun purchases and raising the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle from 18 to 21.

“We want secure and safe schools and we want gun laws that won’t make it so easy for the bad guys to get the damn guns,” McConaughey said.

McConaughey, who declined to take questions, spoke of his own connections to the town. He said his mother had taught kindergarten less than a mile from Uvalde’s Robb elementary school, the site of the 24 May shooting. He also noted that Uvalde was the place where he was taught about responsibilities that come with gun ownership.

“Uvalde is where I was taught to revere the power and the capability of the tool that we call a gun,” he said.

He related the personal stories of a number of the victims.
He told the story of Maite Rodriguez, an aspiring marine biologist. McConaughey’s wife, Camila, sitting nearby, held Maite’s green Converse sneakers, which had a red heart on the right toe to represent her love of nature.
“These are the same green Converse, on her feet, that turned out to be the only clear evidence that could identify her after the shooting,” McConaughey said.

McConaughey acknowledged that gun legislation would not end mass shootings but suggested that more steps can be taken to avert such tragedies.
“We need to invest in mental healthcare. We need safer schools. We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage. We need to restore our family values. We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership,” McConaughey said.
“Is this a cure-all? Hell no, but people are hurting.”

They need to sort out or do away with that Filibuster rule in the senate - get it back to a majority vote in the senate so the other minor party can't hold them (and the country) to ransom...
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

Yes, that would be a good first move - they have such a cumbersome system there.

guns dont kill people, people kill people using any means necessary.

Banning guns over there would end up in civil war.
Look at what Canada is doing, they will end up where only criminals keep their guns, but the law abiding pushovers will happily give theirs up.

"Pushovers?"  So they couldn't possibly be doing so to try to create a safer - & saner - society, then? Rolleyes

Took a civil war to sort out the slavery over there, just maybe a civil war is what is needed...

Although,  it won't be a civil war will it? it will be America vs the NRA...

Nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people... Equally stupid logic...

Why would it make it safer for society to hand theirs in? They are not criminals are they?
I doubt the criminals handed theirs in!

Prime example is all the gang shootings in Auckland right now, low and behold they are finding all the "banned" guns in the hands of the gangs! Who would have thought!
What did the billions spent on the buyback achieve?
Just more left wing anti-gun propaganda.

More garbage coming out of David Parkers mouth.
He says he would rather have a shotgun pointed at him than a semi-automatic!

And your solution is what - become more like America?  Dodgy
I'd rather we became more like Canada if anything. They at least have some controls & apparently, generally a more sensible population.

Left wing anti-gun propaganda again.
Perhaps we should question why the cowardly armed police didnt step in and intervene?

Why dont the media widley cover the stories where an armed citizen has stepped in and taken down the shooter?
This actually happens quite alot in the US.

And by the looks, gun violence is on the increase, obviously this is proof that Jacinda's gun reforms are working like clockwork.

what an oxymoron here, about 40 seconds in...

Praising gun reform while at the same time getting applauded for decriminalization for abortion!
Guns dont kill people, but abortion is technically murder.

The majority of citizens don't want guns in our society - it's not left wing propaganda, it is just what most normal people want - to live peaceful lives, in a  peaceful society.

Violence as a whole is on the increase in NZ for many different societal and economic reasons, but these are societal problems that can't simply be fixed by throwing weapons (or money for that matter) in the mix...  That will only encourage more of what the US have an abundance of ie Mass Shootings...
No-one in their right mind wants that...  I hope...

Absolutely; no one would want mass shootings here.

There are quite a number of Americans now living here; the last census showed over 16 thousand & it may have risen since then.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_N...population.

"There were 16,245 people identifying as being part of the American ethnic group at the 2018 New Zealand census, making up 0.35% of New Zealand's population."
