There's no good reason why they couldn't have caught the train, surely.
Its appalling that those who are in their position aren't far more aware; it creates the perception that while they're trying to change things for the better, they prefer to not apply that to themselves.

they probably justify it with musings of their time being too valuable to sit on a train
