Money, it's always back to the money in this neoliberal world. It costs too much MONEY to strip a house of recyclable fittings....it costs too much MONEY to clear up the slash in forestry, we just want to make more MONEY - NOW !!!

I bought a new battery for my car a couple of weeks ago...a Hankook, made in Korea.  A couple of days later the guy turns up to collect our old batteries for recycling.  I know we don't recycle batteries in NZ anymore, so asked him what they did with them.  They go to Korea - so maybe a few molecules of our old batteries ended up in my new one. How about we fix the world instead of being obsessed with money.

Oh - you heretic, you! Rolleyes Rolleyes  Big Grin

Fixing the world would require changes. Fixing the world would require an end to greed & more consideration of the effect of it on other people & our planet.
Its taken 40 odd years to get into such an awful, unequal state & those few who've benefited hugely do not want to share.

Change is sorely needed  - but chance would be a fine thing.

Yes, everything comes back to the money that so many people don't have enough of. If the economy was working correctly then maybe other factors could take precedence - like buying local instead of cheap rubbish from China. But while we are heading down the slippery slope to socialism the government is giving more and more to people who won't contribute (instead of just supporting those who can't) and the rest of our economy is in trouble - health, education, crime, roading, etc. It's not neo-liberalism that's the problem, it's the unproductive part of our society that takes without giving.

If everyone did their bit we might not have to send batteries offshore for recycling but could deal with them here like we should. And tyres. And plastic bottles. And ....

Good grief! "The slippery slope to socialism??!"
Dodgy

Rather than bashing those who are in desperate need, perhaps we might take a look at how to FIX the bloody awful mess various past govts have created.

Neo Liberalism very clearly IS the problem; it has damaged this & every other country where its been set up/imposed. It is a greed based system & cannot help but damage people - unless they happen to be among the few who've benefited from it.

"The unproductive  part of our society that takes without giving."

That would include homeless people, beggars (remember when we didn't have either of those? I do. Thanks, Neo Liberalism.) & those having no other option but to live in overcrowded conditions because govts stopped/slowed building houses & quite a lot of state houses had been sold by idiot govts.

Frankly I'd prefer that we help those 'unproductive' people rather than miss helping those in genuine need. And some public education is sorely needed with regard to those in need.

We could do worse (& clearly ARE doing far worse) than to (as far as possible) emulate those Nordic countries which have high tax to cover things such as Health, Education etc. etc. & which are a mix of capitalism & socialism, & which have people who constantly feature at the top of 'happiest people' lists.

As long as businessmen and their ilk run the government system it will always stay the same as it is now because the only thing they care about is more money in their and associates bank accounts.

Even when their back accounts are filled to overflowing they will still try to get more because in the pursuit of profits they have forgotten who and what they actually are if they ever knew in the first place. Greed has altered their basic makeup.

How many cars, houses, tv's, boats, holidays, etc ANSWER: UNLIMITED, because their basic humanity is gone and they are now filling in time playing a never-ending game of collecting money and power.

When do they decide that they have enough? ANSWER: NEVER. It is people like this that are running things.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

I really, really hate to say this because its just absolutely sickening but you're absolutely right. They no longer care about the welfare of their fellow humans.

Perhaps we need to ban business people & the very wealthy from becoming politicians.

More people like that Senegalese footballer Sadio Mane, are needed.

"Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world? I was hungry, and I had to work in the field; I survived hard times, played football barefooted, I did not have an education and many other things, but today with what I earn thanks to football, I can help my people," Mané explained.
"I built schools, a stadium, we provide clothes, shoes, food for people who are in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people in a very poor region of Senegal which contributes to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips and even planes. I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me".
Back home in SenegalMané has funded the construction of a school in Bambali, work on the new school began before the summer."
