Labour to build more state houses
#1
If elected. The bribes from both Labour & National are coming thick & fast now.

"Labour housing spokeswoman Megan Woods has promised 6000 additional public and transitional housing places if Labour is elected.
The promise was made at a campaign event in Wellington where Labour Leader Chris Hipkins warned National would wind back progress on state house construction.
Labour is the only major party with a deliverable plan that will help ensure every New Zealander has access to a warm, dry, and affordable home,” Woods said.
In just six years we’ve delivered over 13,000 public homes, the most of any Government since the 1950s. We’ve also added over 4000

transitional homes. We are on track to deliver 21,000 public and transitional homes by 2025 and there is more to come. If re-elected, we’ll deliver another 6000 public homes by 2027,” Woods said.

Labour turned the fire on National too.

A fact sheet, released with the announcement reminded voters that during the financial crisis “National wound down the state house construction pipeline, knee-capping construction activity during a crucial time in the boom-and-bust cycle.

This state house sell-off meant that they left office with 1500 fewer state houses than they began with,” the sheet said.

The party blamed National for the public housing waitlist which has ballooned under Labour, saying that if National had built rather than sold homes the waitlist would be much smaller.

If National had built public housing at the same rate we are, there would be over 21,000 new public homes, accounting for over 85 percent of those on the current waitlist. They depleted our housing stock while sucking $576 million in dividends from Housing New Zealand. This election, National has not committed to any more funded public housing places beyond June 2025,” the sheet said."

Labour has only had 6 years to build them, we better cut them slack.
And don't forget that National sold a bunch of them off.

They did sell them - in most cases to other social housing providers.  So the houses didn't just disappear.  Plus National had around 2500 houses consented and ready to build in 2017 - the same houses that Labour then built (they were going to be anyway).  On top of that during the housing crisis the government purchased around 5000 additional houses in the open market in direct competition with the first home buyers they say they wanted to help.

Let's not forget that the housing waiting list under this government has increased 4 fold in 6 years.

So 6000 additional houses?   Best not to plant that flag in the ground.

National will have it back to a normal level  for you in no time, just need to kick a few people off the waiting lists....
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

State housing urgently needs to be increased & carefully ring fenced legally so no future meddling politicians of whatever ilk, can make their 'improvements' again.

They can't be trusted, & clearly don't give a toss if people are homeless so are therefore unfit to have any say in changing housing. They can continue building more if & when needed & administer state housing but should not be pernmitted to make drastic changes ever again.

I thought they put some on the open market for anyone to buy, but anyway, labour has really failed to deliver when it comes to building houses.

The population has increased. People got older and need their own homes. Property values have skyrocketed, so many can now not afford to buy. Rents are through the roof, and social housing is now more available - so people apply. Used to be that was a pointless exercise, under this government hope returned that folk might get a place. So waiting lists went up. Migrants arrived, and applied for housing. Demand increased faster than new homes could be built...

And yes, thousands HAVE been built. Credit where that is due.

It isn't government failure. It is the market doing what the market does.

You think this is bad? Wait till we start to see climate change refugees...

We can once again thank Neo Liberalism for this particular mess. Turns out that 'the market' is a bit of a bastard when it comes to things like equity.

As I suspect some of those advocating for it back in the day knew very well...

And yes, I'm glad I won't be around to see the worst of desperate climate refugees heading for our country. I do feel sorry though for any descendants having to deal with it.
