‘Venice is worn out’: locals see Jeff Bezos wedding as symbol of city’s ills

Billionaires doing as they please.

Fair enough; it can't be much fun for locals when things like this happen.
in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)

They've been feeling like this for years in Venice, my parents went there in the late 60's and tourists were already unpopular, not enough toilets for instance, as basic as that. They want some but not too many. Remember in Covid days when tourism almost stopped and the canals became clear water again, one could see fish.

sounds like they need a fairly substantial tourist tax to slow up demand
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

Probably makes sense, but that would limit it to wealthy tourists only.

i did a river tour in Shanghai the guide on the boat was telling us all the pollution is because of the tourists

as we go past the back of a restaurant and one of the lackeys is tipping buckets of slop into the river

they say Shanghai is the Venice of Asia

Try Milford Sound. The cruise ships line up.

Close but no cigar. The "Venice of the East" is Suzhou, about 100km west of Shanghai.

When I came here in 1972 the crew of the ship we came over on threw all of their rubbish over the back of the ship into the wash by the stern. Cartons and cartons of it.

That would be the same guide that was blaming the pollution on the tourists. Totally reliable info then  Rolleyes

Discharging is not the only pollution of world heritage sites. As for believing marketing spiels, I don't think that problem is confined to those coming out of China.

I've visited both Shanghai and Suzhou, which is why I knew your "Venice of the East" claim was wrong. I also know not to repeat questionable info.

seems to be a bit of revolt against mass tourism everywhere of late. Authorities have milked mass tourism for all it's worth but I suspect the costs to society are starting to outweigh the benefits - I hope the politicians everywhere are listening...

heisenberg "They don’t do that now"

I don't see why you're so sure, it was definitely frowned on then, ie illegal dumping of rubbish, fly tipping, but I saw sailors/kitchen staff throwing open cartons full of trash and kitchen rubbish over the back rail of the ship into the wash of the propellers, I'm guessing to avoid paying dumping fees to the port area dump for such rubbish.

That situation would still be exactly the same, no observers = no crime but no fees to pay.
