My grandmother married my grandad but it wasn't a good one & she left eventually - she never said but there was a suspicion he had an affair - so she left Mum who was a baby with her older sister & moved from a small town in Nelson down to CHCH where she & a friend set up a dressmaking business. She'd go & look in the windows of the poshest store, do sketches of the dresses, head home & from that make patterns & then the garment.
They did reasonably OK & she retrieved mum to live with her & at some point met my stepgrandad, freshly out from Wales having somehow survived the very worst bits of WW1; his mother owned a pub & that was what he did here, barstaff, management etc. etc. Later in life they did that together, filling in for publicans wanting a a holiday.
Finally got front lawn done & had another bash at hedge.

in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)
