The silver award medal looks like M1882/25, which Tony prices at $850 awarded.  The lot would be worth the hammer price for that item alone.

yes it is the 1882 exhibition medal in silver. I did recognise it, but they usually don't sell for anywhere near that (you can usually divide Tony's prices by 2 to get market value!). Also a couple of nice Milner Thompson tokens, the second one not so common. I just thought I might get a bargain, it being an auction and that the only NZ lot that I noticed. But obviously there were at least 2 wealthy morons who also noticed it (yes I think I might be a bit bitter!). I'll probably get outbid on the Una too!

always seems to be the same pair of tossers bidding these up!

wonder what they intend to do with them all?

bargain?

How many 1963 proof NZ pennies were made, and how many are in private hands?  Difficult call from a photo.

it does look quite nice so could be a proof. Although the sellers other coins look a bit dodgy (think there might be some artificial toning going on!). Bargain price if it is a proof (maybe worth the risk?). But then maybe too good to be true?

Then there's this!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/225045382414?ha...Sw-6lirbLM

just received an offer from the seller, they'll let me have it for 165USD.

I think the frying-pan-and-chemicals combination got a bit out of hand with that one. I knew a collector in the US who reckoned he had the chemical mixtures to generate any kind of toning you'd like.  Probably long gone now, and I never thought at the time to ask him for the recipes :-)

It's got that matte look to it, though I don't like what looks like a bag mark behind the king's eye, and some weakness/wear to the rim+rim beads just in front of the king's robe and at round 6:00 on the ref.

yes I'm leaning towards it being a proof, although I would not be too surprised if it turned out not to be. It certainly hasn't got that obviously a proof look to it. If it's not a proof it is still a very nice example and worth a little bit extra.

they've graded it well struck AU which seems unusual for a proof?

seems like quite a lot to pay for such an uninspiring looking coin!

comments were a bit of a fun read,  someone was trying hard to sabotage that auction...  he might find himself on someones blacklist if he keeps that up.
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

He's been rude in the comments on a couple of my auctions and has been blacklisted.

I clearly missed that one - wonder why the estimate was so low.  The full gold ones are extremely rare (2-3 of each), and I assume the "silver-gold" (plated?) would be identifiable.  They weren't described as such in the listing ...

I'd say it is a mistake, and quite a big one. I wonder what legal grounds they'd have to cancel the sale? Presumably they could argue that the incorrect estimate and possibly wrong category resulted in a lot of people missing it. I did actually sort of notice it at first but dismissed it at the time thinking that if it was a mistake it would get fixed. But then on auction day when I was putting on my bids I realised that it was still as before, and as I was out of town at the time I didn't have access to my reference books (NZ Commemorative Medals or the Bertrand price guide). Hence I wasn't sure if there was something I was missing. I suspect the winning bidder was fully aware and so would have bid more than I was prepared to go to anyway even if I was confident of the value. It's just that I hate to see people getting a bargain (other than me) and so I'm kicking myself for not querying it with Mowbrays at the time. Surprised that no one pointed it out to Mowbrays. Also surprised none of the other bidders present at the time, or the auctioneer realised?

Neville seems a very polite and tolerant individual. If I was the seller I'd have been tempted to respond a little more aggressively. "While on the topic of things being in sorry state, do you have anything to say about the shambles that is your feedback?!"

looks like a close call lucky another bidder snapped it up in the final moments, could have been rather embarrassing!

How does one formally qualify as a numismatist? Any exams?

According to NZ Commemorative medals 1941-2014 (2nd edition) by MacMaster and Purdy, organisers of the NZ National Stamp Exhibition 1967 sold unissued medals to collectors. It doesn't say anything about 1969 but I'm guessing the same might have happened.
