facebook 'related discussions' problem
#1
I don't like facebook but there are some things there that are helpful like the Groups you can set up for special interests and I have several of those. But all of a sudden facebook has introduced this horrible thing called 'related discussions' where suddenly you get someone else's posts tacked on to your own posts without permission. Not even vaguely related in content either. Totally infuriating. I did some google searches to try to find the settings that turn off this unwanted feature and none of the suggestions worked. So I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced this and has found a solution.

Do you mean within your groups?

I haven't experienced this at all on FB, but I've not set up any groups. I belong to some though.

Are you a private membership, or public? My page is secured up the wazoo, and I haven't had that issue. Maybe check your settings...

No, not within my groups. Only on my own Page. For example, several days ago I put up a post about yesterday's partial eclipse of the moon. Usually I would choose the Friends-only setting but I had it temporarily set to Public as I had several  personal friends I wanted to see it but they are not yet my facebook friends. Then all of a sudden all these posts appeared from people who photograph mushrooms and they were going on and on about camera settings for various unusual mushrooms and dates and places when the mushrooms were at their best etc etc. I couldn't understand why they were posting on my thread but then I saw something from facebook saying I might enjoy what they call "Related Discussions"!

Not sure what you mean by 'private' and 'public' membership'. I control the settings for my posts to choose 'Everyone' or 'Friends only' or 'specific friends only' depending on what the post is. But I've never come across 'membership' settings -where do you find those?

Well no because although anyone can post on one of my public threads I don't think a whole group can dump themselves on my thread. This wasn't a post from an individual, it was a whole group appearing there. It is a new feature that facebook have forced on us called 'Related Discussions'. We can supposedly opt out of it but I can't find out where to do that.

Thanks but those settings are for 'similar page' suggestions. What I'm talking about is something facebook has just introduced called "Related Discussions". When these come up on one's own thread it's not because a member has posted it there. It's because facebook's system has put it there as a 'Related Discussion'. This is new and is not good at all so we need to know where the settings are to stop it happening.

I don't get this problem on my page and I do belong to several groups. I don't see any other solution to your issue offered via google than the link above, but I do have Purity, so perhaps that is keeping related discussions off my page. It is a very useful layer of security albeit one Farcebook disapproves of...

It is public groups related, rather than personal page. And it may be that only admins can alter settings to opt in or out of related discussions notifications. Or at least that is what I get from this -

I'm just glad I don't get them!

Thanks crafters_corner but I have all those settings correctly. The 'thing' I'm talking about is called 'Related Discussions' and it's a very new and horrible feature. facebook actually plonks a whole group onto someone's own page without permission. It's quite scary and there has to be some way to turn it off. They say it's to encourage and help users to find other related topics. I had to delete my whole post to get rid of the related group that was inserted into my post without my permission. Not like another member posting but a whole group put there.

Yep, 'everyone' and 'public' the 2 dumbest permissions on Fartface.
