image viewer for windows 10

can anyone please recommend a good, basic image viewer for win 10, along the lines of the old viewer?

currently, my pics are opening in paint, when all i want to do is see what the thumbnail is. i think a recent update may have removed it, as it was there.

i've been using Irfanview for years

you can change the program that opens a particular file on right click menu
right click the file
select: open with
select: choose another app
highlight the image viewer you want to use AND tick the box about always use this app

"Photos" is the MS official default

The windows default seems to be slower to load than it did in previous versions of windows. Not sure why.
