  Russian Earthquake
Posted by: harm_less - 30-07-2025, 02:42 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (1)

One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded happened (8.8 magnitude) at ~11:30 NZT. Live video feed of the Japanese coastline tops Stuff's news feed on this with tsunami expected to hit Japan around 4:00pm NZT. New Zealand will likely see tsunami activity at around 11:30pm NZT.

I guess we'll hear what to expect from the Solomons and Noumea as it passes through that region a few hours prior to it getting here.

  'Abundance' Politics

This sounds interesting. Social democracy....

"One potential proposition, we believe, is abundance.
Put simply, the abundance agenda is a political and economic framework that shifts focus from managing scarcity to building more of what society needs—like housing, clean energy, infrastructure, and innovation.."

Luxon defends election changes after Judith Collins raises problems
Posted by: Lilith7 - 28-07-2025, 03:44 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (18)

I'd like to think they might see sense, but if this idea is as it seems, likely to gain them more votes they'll stick with it. Very interesting that Judith Collins raised it though, when it's surely those groups who are possibly more likely to vote left.

"Judith Collins pointed out that the proposals were inconsistent with people's rights, & that 100,000 or more people  could be directly or indirectly disenfranchised by rules banning  enrolment in the final 13 days before an election, with younger people & Maori, Asian & Pasifika most likely to be affected."

The push-back against seabed mining grows
Posted by: harm_less - 28-07-2025, 03:00 PM - Forum: Environment - Replies (3)

This success for the Whanganui District Council is heartening. The government doesn't realise the strength and tenacity of local opposition to the Fast Tracking of this highly controversial activity. It's going to be a long and rocky road for TTR as they attempt to make good their plans for the South Taranaki Bight. Anti Seabed mining sentiment is running very high down here in the Naki.
