Old Legacy Laptop upgrade. - Bryan - 12-09-2025

I have a Toshiba Tecra R850 Laptop. I have tried to see if it has UEFI but it would appear not to. When I go into BIOS, there is no menu item in any of the divisions ie. Main, Advanced etc that mention Legacy or UEFI. I have tried the restart method but that too does not show UEFI.

I have been able to install W11 23H2 but going to 24H2 is a no go. It is my understanding that 24H2 will not install on Legacy machines - even Rufus advises that during the compilation of a Rufus USB set up.

Please confirm that the Tecra has come to its end of life as an up to date Windows machine.

It sure sounds like it.

Time to try Linux and enjoy an operating system that doesn't come preinstalled with spyware.

In W11 24H2 they also changed the hardware requirement for the CPU.

Galaxy posted a question about a program called Flyby11 https://tmmb.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?tid=4195

In the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd3isXSBTUs at about 7 through to 8 minutes theres a requirement that can not be bypassed by any means - the CPU MUST be SSE4.2 If its not then NOT POSSIBLE. 23H2 is fine, BUT thats going end of life soon as well.

Personally I'd run Flyby11 1st and see if thats the problem.

i use this one in auto mode - just put auto 11 in the filename and it does the whole process automatically
https://github.com/AveYo/MediaCreationTool.bat

so you would download from above site, rename "MediaCreationTool.bat" to "Auto 11 MediaCreationTool.bat" and run it on the target machine

I couldn't say of it will fix the issue you have, but might be worth a try...

I see flyby11 seems to be gone now...

Its still available, but seems github dont have it.

Can currently get it from  Flyby11 v3.0 - Free Download - OlderGeeks.com Freeware Downloads   Down Bottom of page.

Or  Download FlyOobe / Flyby11 1.10

The newer version is called FlyOobe ( haven't tried it yet) But its got a lot more options.

Thank you all. I will try to resolve the problem over the week-end. I think I may just have to leave it at 23H2.
