The cliche that the centre right runs down social investment in favour of enriching its conservative base is based on actual statistics, not just opinion. That base doesn't need public services, it can afford to go private. So tax breaks take priority over public transport and new public hospitals. Landlords are more important than their tenants.

And that conservative base knows it.
