And lets not forget that there was a time not so very long ago, when all those in positions of power (from politicians on down, i.e. postmasters, vicars, business heads etc. etc.) were always male.

That, I think, is the point - people hanker for the "good old days", and find the modern world confusing.

Yes; they forget,or prefer to ignore that it wasn't 'the good old days' for everyone.
