So what?
That's the fallback position for many a failed argument. Just because it used to be so does not mean we are doomed to repeat it.
We have examples internationally of better ways to handle corrections. We have plenty of research that backs such programmes up. What we don't have is the progressive political willingness to put such programmes into operation. Some MPs would rather ride the boost from an electorate still living in the past and enjoying old attitudes that make them feel superior over others.
