loony leftie throws crowbar through winstons home
#89
I joined NZI in the early days, until someone revealed various facts of life about it that made me a little wary. It was a good alternative to the shut down of the TM boards in those days, but as time went on its character changed and I opted out. Then this place popped up, and was a better fit for me, for all sorts of reasons. It isn't a cess pool, more like a garden pond frequented by likeminded friends. And Alice, there is nothing wrong with that, it suits the majority, just as Issues suits its majority. We find our own communities, slagging off this one when you are a relatively new and occasional contributor is really more about you than us. As a young friend of mine likes to tell the adults in his life 'that's more a you problem' when faced with realities he is disinclined to consider.

Most of us get a great deal of pleasure from being a part of this community. That's why we come here. So do you obviously, it's just a different kind of pleasure. Each to his own eh?

Of course they are, but intentions matter, I think, and there's a big difference between someone genuinely willing to express their views, and engage in a rational discussion about them, versus someone doing so in bad faith, someone who is only doing it to get a reaction to feed their own ego or to make themselves feel powerful, or whatever. I suppose those are the extremes - and most people probably land somewhere in between, though. Attention seeking specifically, I imagine may have different motivations entirely.

Additionally, I find it hard to believe that someone who acts like heisenberg would have actually formed their opinions on their own. The fact that heisenberg is unwilling to explain why he says what he says seems to suggest this; I suspect he is merely parroting certain talking points without much of anything behind them. At least Alice provides evidence for her opinions, dubious as that evidence is...

I knew someone who fell down a certain right-wing rabbit-hole recently, and you could not get an answer containing any thought from them. Just repetition of the same well-known lies, word-for-word, like they were reading from a script. No logical explanation of why they apparently believed what they did, along with not only a refusal to engage in any sensible discussion, but even going so far as to accuse others of refusing to engage with them - despite obvious attempts at doing so.

It was clear that the things they were saying were not an opinion they had formed themselves, just one they had picked up from somewhere - or had handed to them. In which case, was it really their own opinion being expressed in the first place?

So what? Respectfully, when some untrained puppy comes along and poops on our lawn we have a few choices. We can pick it up and dispose of it, we can watch and hope someone else will step in it, or we can accept nature will dispose of it in due course. Or we can try to rub the responsible perpetrators nose in it I suppose, though I have never found that to work. Some dogs just love pooping on other people's territory...

As Lilith often points out human beings are weird. Probably what makes them so fascinating.
