David Seymour at it again...how the devil can a childless man have even the slightest idea of what it is to be a parent?! He really is a nasty bit of work.
The usual punitive 'remedy' from the far right. Idiocy.
Parents will face fines of up to $300 for a first offence, & $3000 for a second or subsequent offence

I remember being so at my wits end with a fourteen year old daughter who was refusing to go to school that I called the police on her. The young constable walked into her room and told her to get up, get dressed and go to school and she fixed him with a very direct look, and said quietly and calmly, 'fuck off, I am never going back to that place...'
And he did, with an apologetic grin to me and a 'good luck' as he left.
David Seymour needs to fuck off and have a teenager. They teach us grown ups a lot.

People who have never had children should not be allowed by law to hold any positions of power in the community or politics, my Mum believed that all her life.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

Oh, that they do - three teenage boys were a sort university....
I think one of the highlights was coming home one day to find the eldest had brought his motorbike (Triumph 1968) into his bedroom, ready to take it apart.
Although once I mentioned how good it would look painted pink, with one or two tasteful purple pansies on it, it went outside again fairly quickly...

I think I'm inclined to agree with your Mum, clearly a wise woman...

I suspect its safe to say we're all familiar with Rimmer...
But, in the future we're told that all those shit jobs will be done by robots.
There may even come a time, far in the distant future when humans don't have to work at mundane jobs & instead can for example, continue lifelong education in whatever interests them.
Assuming we haven't managed to destroy the entire planet by then.

Okay. The reality is most of our truants or unschooled children do perfectly fine in later life, some in fact exceed expectations in any number of ways. My own deeply challenging child has proved this to be true, much to my own chagrin.
Later in life, well after parenting I had the privilege and opportunity of studying and researching the history and development of western systems of education, and that experience leaves me very sceptical about the way we do this vital task, and why we do it. There are better ways than imposing standardisation in this process, but those alternatives foster traits, talents, and skill strengths that might threaten the way we run our communities. Hence they remain 'alternative' in the other sense of the word.
But I remain optimistic that future parenting generations have better experiences with the education of their children. Maybe the inevitable revolution by AI will foster that...

I have a past workmate who is a skilled cabinet maker and task organiser. He went on to become a teacher in his 40s specialising in sports pursuits and manual subjects. He quickly realised many of his secondary school students struggled to learn in a typical classroom situation because they were kinesthetic learners, as he had recognised in himself.
Like the many kids that are railroaded into attending university that would be far better off learning a trade the pursuit of academic qualifications is wasted effort for so many individuals. Learn by doing and without the millstone of a student loan to look forward to.

Support curiosity. That is the driver for learning in living beings, and learning is living. When we stop, we start to die. Really simple that particular truth...

Yeah, old hat, we all knew who you meant, we had that conversation about 3 months ago when he stared opening his gob about the Treaty of Waitangi and how it could be improved. He's such a goober. Extreme right wing a... hole.

And the opposite of course. I took a technical course at high school, most of us did, the school being in the biggest industrial suburb in the country at the time. A class mate was like me, he didn't shine at any subject at all, just in school because that is what we did. Like me he took an apprenticeship as a mechanic. Years later when I was running a service station workshop he came in for a WoF, and I asked what he was doing these days...still a mechanic ? No, he was a research chemist. We don't find our right place in the world until we are long out of school.

Not every child is an academic & many who aren't especially good at stuff like that can be brilliant at tech stuff - building gadgets & things.
While our education system is somwhat better these days at understanding that kids learn in different ways, it took them quite a while to recognise dyslexia & that some kids have what they call specific learning difficulties. There was an article in something, can't recall what now, about some parents taking their kids to SPELD & making very sure the school didn't find out because they'd have disapproved & might have made difficulties.
Thankfully that seems to have changed & probably too, more is known about Dyslexia, though not sure if they acknowledge dyscalculia or not.

No, they don't - I have it, one of my daughters has it...and her daughter. When my granddaughter was at school she got ''special'' classes for maths, like, just give her more until she finally ''gets it''. No, you don't get it, that's the whole problem, you need strategies to get around the problem, make it work for you. My daughter finally took her out of school and home schooled her like she was...all my kids were homeschooled.
Dyslexics were missed because they learned how to disguise the problem...they are very good at it. Dyscalculia is hard to pickup because they read and write well, and maths isn't a communication skill. I could drop maths in the 4th form - oh, bliss !

Happened to lots of people late 60's early 70's. Flower Power Days.

Me too - high school maths teacher eventually gave up so I used to sit in maths & doodle all over my maths book, & of course back then no one had heard of it.
The weird thing is though that I'm brilliant at budgeting. None of my kids have it but the youngest had what they called specific learning difficulty; sent him to SPELD fpr a few months ehich helped.
I do wish our education system was a bit quicker off the mark with things like these.

In the 3rd Form we had a maths test every Maths period, those who failed got 2 whacks with the cane. I cheated of course, but was soon found out. So, no, you can't beat it into people either. And next period would be Tech Drawing where I was doing practical geometry, but maths teachers are not practical people, so they couldn't tie up the theoretical world with the practical world. For me, maths is an everyday part of my engineering world, it's not stuff done on paper.

That maths teacher sounds like a sadisitc prickle. I'd like to think that teachers now are more enlightened.
They do at least know about Dyslexia & ADDHD these days.
