Wtf is wrong with us? We could do worse than to follow the Welsh example; they have a 'duty to assist' legislation to help prevent homelessness. It holds local authorities responsible to prevent homelessness.

And of course, nothing at all to do with those stricter emergency housing rules

I'm not sure he's capable of intelligence.
Just regurgitates the same old right-wing "gotchas" like a broken record, thinking that somehow achieves anything.

He can't even come up with an original username, picture, or signature.
All just copied from a character in a TV show.
Does he even have a personal identity?
Or is 'trolling the left" his only purpose in life?

Sad.

Okay.

I chose my username about 20 years ago in the original PC World PressF1 forum.
Long before that show existed.
Anyone here from back then knows that.

Nistershims? I am torn between aspersions and nasturtiums, but I do like it! Mine was a stolen ID, my kid was under age when she registered with Trademe long before I did. She got onto the message board and was really enjoying the interaction when two things happened at the same time, TM made an Under 18 rule and she got a job, so I adopted her membership... And that was all she wrote. Up till then I'd been playing on international forums, the New Zealand version was very different. All told I have been on forums since 98, and using a computer since 1986.

That is an awful long time. But then, I am really old, sez she gleefully.

Damned if I know how long I've been online, but this name is one I used when on the Landover Baptist site, (an American satirical site) & it just seemed easier to keep it.

you tell me

some are homeless through "shit happens" reasons

some are homeless because they want to be, like the druggie son of a neighbour who was ejected from his parents sleepout because he set it on fire

some are homeless because they cant behave themselves

I was just days away from finding a safe place to sleep in a park or reserve. I had actually scoped one out.

I know shit happens. And sometimes it happens more than once in a lifetime. It's like the opposite of winning Lotto. And it is as scary as hell. And we survive, or we drown. Thing is drowning can look like a choice from a distance.

I just wish everyone who goes there had the help I was granted, and am grateful for each day.

It is almost never a 'choice'.

Usually it can happen when the landlord puts up the rent to an unrealistic level. Being unable to afford rent, unable to find an affordable roof over your head is often what leads to people having to sleep in their cars or under bushes, bridges .

In a more reasonable world, a govt with the welfare of its people at heart would have, rather than selling off state housing, instead built more to meet the need. Instead successive idiot govts have either ignored or worsened the problem.

Homelessness increase 'not necessarily due to govt policy changes'...Minister Tama Potaka.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/564...s-minister

He then explains that ot just might be their own fault for leaving a situation in which they were being sexually abused & the decision was seen as 'contributing' to their situation by MSD.

Well of course it isn't the govt's fault. Despite them rejecting one third of housing applications...

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/557...ted-by-msd

Perhaps this govt could get off its derriere & set about building decent housing...

Think about the causes of homelessness. Not enough affordable homes where they are needed, and not enough money to pay the rent.

So, the solutions are obvious. Build more, or buy more, or update existing, and provide for affordable rents, with targeted subsidies as required.

Then we will see who 'chooses to live on the streets'.

They wouldn't do that, it would mean that they wouldn't get the high prices that they get for the rentals they own.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche
