Here is a great online tool to help you choose candidates who have pledged to stand behind the ratepayers.

If you aren't interested in "wokeness" (whatever that is) or dog whistling cookerism, and live in Dunedin, here's a handy resource.

Entered a local address (not my real one to avoid being spammed) and the candidates who this website gave green ticks was enough evidence of its intent. Good to confirm those I had already binned.

Paul Barlow's Youtube channel is a great resource for guidance on your local body vote. This a sample on our local area with other videos for many councils so check his channel out.

I found the tool rather useful.
There is one candidate that I considered to be woke as fuck and backed maori wards, but has signed all  pledges so im  considering voting for them now.
On the other hand, there are some who have publicly promised to keep rates below inflation but not signed the pledge, so they loose my vote.
I dont know about you, but I would have to be fucked in the head to vote for someone who doesn't give a shit about the ratepayer and is happy to permit rates hikes to unaffordable levels.

You should have paid more attention in Basic Economics class CT.

The bit that always makes me grin is how ratepayers - and yes, I used to be one once - always want more and better services from their councils, but don't want to pay for them. And, when it comes time to cast their vote to elect councillors to do the work those same ratepayers don't want a bar of doing themselves, they can't even be bothered to do that with any real research and thought.

And that is exactly why that old cliche is right, we really do get the leadership we deserve.

Basic economics are spend the money on essential services and not nice to haves. A great deal of councils blow money on everything buy essential, Wellington is a classic example, look at their aging water infrastructure with zero investment in it.

I dont, I would rather it be more user pays if anything. I just want roads and water from my tap.
Any facilities should be self sustaining and be able to fund themselves.

that doesn't always work though CT, some services aren't self sustaining and can't pay for themselves but are valuable to society.
Libraries for example,
and I would hazard a guess that very few stadiums or sports facilities in NZ breakeven.
local roading for example, councils have no ability to charge more from high users.
Sewage stormwater ie wellington if they charge actual costs required, rates would probably double, but there is enormous pressure on councils to cap rates rises?

If there was an absolute mandate for all facilities to breakeven, society would lose out on a lot of services

I don't think the [subsidised] rent I pay these days would cover my 'share' of the rates on this property...  Smile

But I did vote.

mine is signed and sealed and ready to post...

Bit surprised at the number of less than stellar contenders for mayor down here. Two of them have been in jail, one for sharing the mosque shooting online, another ones profile reads like he's completely lost his marbles and a couple apparently of the misinformation spreading variety

Where do you think all the disadvantaged people in NZ would be sleeping at night if the taxpayer didn't look after them Heisenberg?  We would then have a whole different set of problems to deal with.
