Where do you think all the disadvantaged people in NZ would be sleeping at night if the taxpayer didn't look after them Heisenberg? We would then have a whole different set of problems to deal with.

Perhaps if some of the wealthier members of society were to pay their fair share rather than avoiding taxes, we could manage better.
“Wealth accumalation is often tied to immoral & criminal practices. In almost all cases, rich & super rich people should not have amassed so much money in the first place, & reparations for past harms – including tax evasion – are long overdue.
Further, we've seen that extreme wealth concentration is a serious threat to democracy in myriad ways. And the ceaseless drive to accrue more & more money is halting the green transition & driving climate disaster.”

IRD does a pretty good job so how about you tell us how they get away with not paying their fair share

wishing the problem goes away doesn't make it go away - it is New Zealand's problem collectively to deal with. If we have a generation of lazy layabouts (for example) it is collectively New Zealand's problem and responsibility to deal with that, as it is with family violence, homelessness etc, because New Zealand society created that generation...
Burying your head in the sand and pretending it's not a problem, hoping they will just go away and hide under a bridge is not a solution to the underlying problem. It becomes a cancer that eats away a society and eventually will/has cause all manner of problems...

True - they're far too busy helping wealthy people avoid paying taxes...

you won’t get an accountant doing anything illegal, if you ever had anything to do with accountants you would know that Ex IRD accountants are welcomed by many practices. They know the tax system in depth and how the system works from the 'inside'. Tax laws are complex and a deep knowledge of them is key to knowing how to mitigate a clients tax burden, legally.

"legally" Are you really ignorant enough of business and taxation strategies to question the legality of structuring income streams to mitigate tax burden?

It is interesting the way you separate people into groups that appear to have nothing in common. The poor old taxpayer v the vulnerable for instance. Trouble is they are one and the same, given a slight change in circumstances. Fact... Yesterday I was in New World at the dairy section trying to work out which pack of butter was cheapest, alongside a man I know as another local. He is about twenty years younger than me, has some severe health issues, and also lives alone on a limited income provided by the state. He too was looking for dairy food items he could fit into his budget. We both had professional backgrounds and families back when... He was a trained accountant in his working life before things changed, these days he is a street person living out of a supermarket trolley and I'm an old lady living in social housing. We both pay taxes on our incomes, on our purchases, we both contribute to the community and the wider society, albeit in different ways. Similar education, similar life experiences, similar interests even, but different current lives.
We are all the same, just different. And change is constant...

Dad was a chartered accountant, I studied two years of a bcom before switching to IT and yes I have an accountant...
bit of a pointless line Heisenberg. Initially you said you won't find an accountant doing anything illegal, quite clearly that statement is wrong. All depends on the person and their circumstances
