The first of National election promises
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-03-2023, 02:19 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (10)

Or possibly, bribe. In principle a good idea but its only available per household rather than per child which may mean its of about the same use as a chocolate teapot for many people.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...han-180000

"If the public service stops hiring so many consultants, National Party leader Christopher Luxon says it could afford greater childcare subsidies.
During his State of the Nation speech on Sunday, Luxon promised he would order the public service to cut $400 million from its consultancy bill. That money, he said, would fund a new childcare policy, giving a 25% rebate to most families’ childcare bills.
The childcare rebates were expected to cost about $250m per year and would be available per household – not per child."
Surely the sensible option would be for govt to cover all childcare costs from our taxes, rather than allowing it to continue to be sometimes not much more than a money making exercise.

  Android phone Home screen ...
Posted by: Galaxy01 - 04-03-2023, 09:07 PM - Forum: PC World Chat - Replies (4)

I have a Samsung Galaxy A72 phone, running Android 13.

I changed the Home Screen from the Default to a new one.  But after using it for a while, I don't quite like it and wanted to change it back to the default pix.

To my disappointment, no way I can find the default pix.

Can someone here direct me on how to reset the home screen to the default pix?

Cheers

Are you looking to rent a flat in Auckland?
Posted by: Roscoe - 04-03-2023, 09:10 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

I am moving out of a flat in McKenzie Rd, Mangere Bridge, Auckland and to help my landlord find a new tenant I am wondering if there is someone that would consider moving in after I have left. I am leaving on 16th April, not because of any problems but because I have bought my own apartment.

The first floor flat is furnished with a two seater setee, double bed, bedside tables, coffee table, small table where you could eat your meals, bench oven, microwave and fridge in kitchen, 50" TV, cupboards and wardrobe, plenty of shelves, shower and toilet in bathroom. Sliding door opens out onto a small patio. Rent is a reasonable $400 week with a 4 week bond. Power, water and internet included in the rent. Laundry is downstairs with washing machines and dryers.

I have had no problems with the landlord in the 16 months I have rented the flat. I have only had one small problem in the flat when the extractor fan in the shower stopped working and was replaced fairly quickly.

I have had no problems with any annoying tenants such as rowdy music parties. The flat is well insulated and the windows are double glazed so there is little outside noise and although there is a panel heater, I have only used it once. The flat is warm most of the time.

The flats have two swipe cards (one for you and one for your spouse) to enter the main door into the flats and also into the apartment.

If you are interested I suggest you contact Megan on 021 0616476 or (09) 263 7205 and tell her that Ivan gave you her number.

If you have any questions you might like to send me a text or give me a call on 021 0370344. I am available most of the time, Monday afternoons excepted.

The a380 - the biggest aircraft i the skies
Posted by: Roscoe - 03-03-2023, 08:50 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

The 747 used to be the largest aircraft in the skies but the plane makers are Boeing out Big Grin as the a380 is now the largest aircraft. The plane cost £280m, carries 520 passengers, 1600 pieces of luggage and 320,000 litres of fuel. The a380 is a two storey, 369 ton aircraft It carries 200 tons of passengers fuel and cargo. It weighs 560 tons all up.

And you might remember that it was in 1903 that Frank Whittle was the pioneer of the turbo jet.

And, of course, the a380 flies all over the world and Heathrow is one of the many airports the a380 leaves from.

Heathrow is the largest single-site employer in the UK. More than 76,000 people work at the airport  – and many more nearby. In total, Heathrow supports 114,000 local jobs and has 160 shops 59 restaurants. Makes our little airport look tiny.

  Generator LOad advice
Posted by: piroska - 02-03-2023, 05:11 PM - Forum: PC World Chat - Replies (8)

The new generator is 2.8HP, 1.1kva so it says.
Now I have a fridge/freezer 152w defrost it says, and 0.63a.
Means nothing to me.

And an old Kelvinator freezer, ancient.

Google tells me I can't run either off it, too much load. But, would I damage it? Or would it just not work? Or pop the breaker or something? There was scary info about damaging motor and/or alternator etc on the net.
And a lady with a similar one said she killed hers by trying to run kettle/toaster.

Well I get that, they're too much watts...2000 for instance.

But the fridge or freezer? I understand they have more load on starting than running.

Someone else said they ran 2 old freezers off their same size as mine one without issue.

So I don't know what to think now.
Just don't want to blow it up on it's first use.

  sander type to buy
Posted by: Jessie123 - 01-03-2023, 01:28 PM - Forum: Gardening & DIY - Replies (3)

Hi, wanting to sand back our deck, that has multiple layers of stain on it, back to the wood and start again with fresh stain as it is very uneven coloured now. But not sure what type of sander i would use. Should I buy a belt sander? Or would I be better off to hire a large floor sander? Thanks in advance.

Idiot Tamaki provides much needed comic relief
Posted by: Lilith7 - 01-03-2023, 12:04 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

Albeit inadvertently. Big Grin Rolleyes

Apparently according to the McBishop, the cyclone is all the fault of the wicked people of Gisborne because he has discovered (in the interests of 'research' you understand)  that the people in Gisborne & Hastings have the highest number of porn watchers in NZ & biggest average per capita in the world.

So, clearly this natural disaster is entirely down to the porn watchers. And of course, any woman who has an abortion - & of course, those gays, can't leave them out. Rolleyes

Such complete & utter ignorance, exhibited so very widely & willingly is hilarious & may well provide those who've come through the cyclone & flooding with their first laugh in quite a while - so thank you, Brian Tamaki! Big Grin Big Grin

  Printer ink question
Posted by: SueDonim - 01-03-2023, 09:37 AM - Forum: Photography, film and video - Replies (4)

I do colour prnting on a Canon Pixma MG8250. The main black (it has two black cartridges) has run out and of course the Canon brand ink is 5x the price of the cheap non-brand stuff. The printer is old enough that I'm not the least bit concerned about warranty, but, if I buy the cheap cartridge...

Will it clog up the print head?
Will the printer recognise it as being non-Canon and stop working?
Will the colour accuracy be OK?

Until now I have always used Canon brand ink but do so little colour printing that I've been using up cartridges I bought years ago and this is the first time I've had to buy any for a long time.

(I use a Brother laser for day-to-day black and white).

Thanks

  Massive violations in Ukraine
Posted by: Lilith7 - 28-02-2023, 02:31 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (8)

According to the UN, Russia's war against Ukraine has triggered massive human rights violations.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/2/27...ment-meets

"Russia faced strong criticism over its invasion of Ukraine on Monday as the top United Nations rights body and a global disarmament forum met, amid warnings that human rights worldwide were backsliding.
Days after the United Nations General Assembly in New York voted overwhelmingly to demand that Russia withdraw from Ukraine immediately, Moscow’s war also dominated the opening of the UN Human Rights Council and Conference for Disarmament sessions in Geneva.

Bonnie Jenkins, the United States undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, criticised Russia for suspending its participation in the New START Treaty, the last nuclear arms control pact between Moscow and Washington.
Russia is once again showing the world that it is not a responsible nuclear power,” she said, warning that “we now face a dramatically unstable security environment”.

She also made an impassioned appeal before the rights council, quoting a man who last March saw 15 children taken from the children’s home he ran in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and “didn’t have a chance to stop it”.
These 15, she said, are “among countless Ukrainian children, that Russia has reportedly abducted“.
