Actor Tom Wilkinson dead
Posted by: Lilith7 - 31-12-2023, 02:13 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Most of us will remember him from The Full Monty.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/ce...dies-at-75

"Tom Wilkinson, the Oscar-nominated British actor known for his roles in The Full Monty, Michael Clayton and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has died, his family said. He was 75.

A statement shared by his agent on behalf of the family said Wilkinson died suddenly at home on Saturday. It didn't provide further details.
Wilkinson was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his work in 2001's family drama In The Bedroom in 2001 and in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Michael Clayton, a 2007 film that starred George Clooney.
He is remembered by many in Britain and beyond for playing former steel mill foreman Gerald Cooper in the 1997 comedy The Full Monty, about a group of unemployed steel workers who formed an unlikely male stripping act.

Wilkinson appeared in dozens of other movies, including Batman Begins, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Valkyrie.
The actor was recognised for his services to drama in 2005 when he was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire."

I don't know how I feel about this. I can understand the action from the violence point of view, but from a commercial cost? Surely there are better ways to deal with such an incredible talent...

Problem with Sound in Acer Chromebook 317
Posted by: Mzee - 30-12-2023, 12:20 AM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (4)

I have two identical Acer Chromebook 317 with Jasper Lake HD Audio Pro cards. They have both been converted to MX Linux 23 OS. One works perfectly, the other has the card disabled & locked, so I can not enable it. Sound works on a USB card, but Jasper is disabled. I have checked the settings on both except that one card , & they are identical.
How can I enable the Jasper Lake card?  Huh

Here are the information sheets for both computers. Jasper Lake sound card is disabled in the second one

Israel denying visas to UN staff
Posted by: Lilith7 - 27-12-2023, 02:39 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (1)

Israel seems hell bent on going rapidly down the wrong path.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/...te=2581933

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israeli forces will not lower the intensity of fighting and are “deepening operations in southern Gaza”, with the air force hitting 100 targets in 24 hours.

 • United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has appointed Sigrid Kaag as Gaza’s aid coordinator, but the path ahead for humanitarian relief remains difficult with no breaks in fighting.

Israel denies visas to UN staff as it hits back against criticism
Israel is “abusing its powers” as an occupying force in Gaza to deny visas to certain UN staff, Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur to the occupied Palestinian territories, told Al Jazeera.
Her comments come as Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen wrote on X on Monday that he had instructed his ministry to deny a visa extension for a UN employee in Israel and to reject the visa request of another. Cohen accused the UN of cooperating with the “propaganda of the terrorist organisation Hamas”.

"Israel’s Dermer meets US adviser Sullivan in Washington, DC

As we reported earlier, Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is in Washington, DC, where he has reportedly just met with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
The pair discussed efforts to bring home the remaining captives held in Gaza by Hamas, a White House official told Reuters.
The pair also reportedly discussed transitioning to a different phase of the war, according to Reuters."
Really - perhaps "the pair" might manage to discuss an immediate ceasefire, allowing Red Crescent & other humanitarian organisations into Gaza to try to fix as much of the harm done as is possible.
And then perhaps 'the pair' might even try to make a start on peace in the long term...removing Hamas leaders & Israel's righwing govt would be an enormous step in the right direction.
They won't though. Its all just going to carry on with each side gleefully murdering each other's children & wrecking each other's countries.
This,in the season of goodwill to all for some...

Hi.

Im finally planning to ditch my xtra.co.nz email .
I'd prefer a email host that doesnt ~read~ or scrape my emails . So I dont want to use gmail 0r outlook.com

Ive been looking at zohomail & protonmail , the basic paid versions
I dont have a domain name , Im not sure if the paid version of these offers basic personal email hosting .

Any others I could consider ?
Cheers

  New antibiotics developed with AI

This is a big deal, not only can the deep learning models study their effectiveness, but also the toxicity in humans.
MRSA is pretty serious and becoming prevalent in hospitals. This could be a gamechanger in drug development.

  The shift to ARM architecture
Posted by: nzoomed - 26-12-2023, 01:20 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - No Replies

Don't know if we will see anything change anytime soon, but its rumored that windows 12 will support it.
It's not like Microsoft haven't done ARM windows builds earlier however.

Still skeptical how it would stack up against x86 for games.

For walking out and slamming the door on me when I told him under no circumstances that I would be having that jab.
Now he confesses to me that he has not felt the same since and was mad because it never prevented him from getting covid.
