  Good little Advertisment
Posted by: Wainuitech - 12-04-2025, 03:16 PM - Forum: PC World Chat - Replies (1)

I Dont normally post anything about advertisements, but one from Firetrust ( Mailwasher) is quite good. (All about Scams)

Originally designed by a Christchurch Guy Nick Bolton, around 2000. Been using it myself since then, its brilliant for catching spam and god knows what else.

In most Spam emails, you get to see the actual address it comes from. Eg: if it says its from the IRD -- You then see the real address -- Yeah not IRD Wink

Firetrust Advert

Edited: For people who don't know what it is or how it works, heres a video on YouTube: How MW Works

I use it slightly differently, same result -- when open, tick the check box "Select All" Then scroll through and untick the ones I want to allow.

The Mondragon corporation (Americans think we're communists!)
Posted by: Lilith7 - 12-04-2025, 12:05 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Another way of doing business. In the Basque area of Spain created an industrial corporation back in 1956 which is still going & is one of the largest co ops in the world. All the workers share in both profits & losses & there are now 81 autonomous co operatives within it.

No system is ever going to be perfect but this seems like a more humane, fairer way. The world could certainly do worse - & has.

  Microsoft 365 stealth upgrades
Posted by: nzoomed - 12-04-2025, 10:31 AM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (16)

This is something Ive just observed for the first time, but according to google, this has been happening since around 2020.

About a week ago I set up a newly purchased laptop and transferred the data across, etc.
I uninstalled the preinstalled office 365 and reinstalled and reactivated office 2016 with the users current licence.

This was the home and student version so was just word and excel.

About a week later the user called me and complained that their office was not the "same" as before and could not save documents, etc.
Was only letting them save to one drive, I smelt a rat and suspected this sounded like 365 to me, but thought the user could not find the browse button.

I took a look at the computer and low and behold the thing was running 365, but still was listed as 2016 in the apps list.
I was doubting myself at this point, because I was sure I had left it with 2016.

Anyway, I suspected it was an update that did this and I was correct, I thought it may have been a free upgrade with the added benefits until I discovered the major issue here, it only lets you save to onedrive!
Even if i went to change the default save location, this thing pops up with the message along these lines "this free version of word can only save documents to onedrive, please purchase a subscription to unlock all its features"

I was gob smacked, Microsoft has the audacity to "upgrade" your older version of office to 365 which is a subscription based model and then expect you to pay to unlock features you had already paid for.
Anyway, I ended up removing and reinstalling it twice, first to test if the updates were causing this, which I was able to confirm it was, so I had to reinstall a second time and disable the automatic updates in office itself.

My question was why it was running OK on the old PC running windows 10? I didnt see any automatic updates disabled on that machine.
And if its correct that this has been happening since around 2020, then its not a windows 11 thing either.
It also appears its not just the home and student version affected. Am interested to hear if others have encountered this before.
Ive reinstalled older versions of office a bunch of times on newer computers and never encountered this before, or at least never had any users complain!

The Orange Peril now wants migrants declared dead
Posted by: Lilith7 - 11-04-2025, 04:20 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (2)

Unbelievable! The idiot wants living migrants declared dead so that they'll 'self deport.' He should be removed from power as quickly as possible before he does more harm.

ICE wants trucks to round up immigrants.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 11-04-2025, 11:41 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (7)

Either this person knows nothing of recent history - or worse, knows & does not care. Dodgy

Reading his comments made me feel sick. That anyone can think like this in this day & age is terrifying. To look at one section of our community like this can so very, very easily be transferred to another group, & another & then another...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...ion-amazon

We need to get better at treating this like a business,” the acting Ice director, Todd Lyons, said. He said that he wanted to see a deportation process “like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings”. His comments were first reported by the Arizona Mirror.

Homan added that it “bothers him” when judges attempt to prevent him from using the act. He also said that family detention was still “on the table” as a policy.

Lyons also spoke highly of other new technology being potentially implemented in the deportation process. He expressed hopes that the agency could utilize artificial intelligence to “free up bed space” and “fill up airplanes”, allowing Ice to deport immigrants at a quicker pace."

Meta whistle blower alleges company worked with China
Posted by: Lilith7 - 10-04-2025, 03:41 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

She told U.S. senators that the company undermined public security in order to build a $18 billion business in China.

Meta denied this. But the company does generate advertising revenue  from advertisers based in China.

Has anyone had to deal with Microsoft customer support?
Posted by: nzoomed - 10-04-2025, 12:54 PM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (6)

There doesnt even appear to be any support other than their AI answer phone that basically responds that we cant help you with your query.
I was having to sort out an account issue where someone was overcharged for office 365, in the end I sorted it out myself and turned out that the user had purchased a second subscription with a completley different microsoft account that I had to try and dig up from a multitude of email addresses, then reset the forgotten password.
Too bad if they were locked out of the account.

  Extreme rightwing christian views, America.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 09-04-2025, 11:53 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (4)

Whacko nutter fruit loop views strongly suggest that their sanity might be in question.

One wants the death penalty for false sexual assaults reports. he claims that "Metoo would end 'real' fast."  No quote on his views on any penalties for rape, but it seems unlikely he'd be in favour of the death penalty for that. The same idiot doesn't believe women ought to be able to vote.

Sodium ion batteries are getting better and more companies building them.
Will be a good option for home energy storage very soon once the cost comes down.
