  Golden Age of Gaming
Posted by: wholetruth - 17-02-2020, 09:08 AM - Forum: Gaming - Replies (10)

Probably nostalgia speaking, but my favourite period for gaming was the mid-to-late 90's.

Full texture mapping was becoming do-able. The Dooms and Quakes of the world found themselves cloned over and over again.

With the introduction of the CD-ROM, we started seeing gloriously unnecessary cut-scenes and grainy FMV. Big-name Hollywood stars would woodenly act their way through scripts that made little sense, in an environment that confused them greatly. Finally, I could click on Christopher Walken and make him do things.

With CD technology came great sound. No need for text-to-speech synthesis, yay!

3D cards slid into view with varying levels of support. Programmers could now throw out as many colours as they like, assuming that the user's Voodoo card would cope. Lesser mortals would sigh, and pick the software rendered mode, wondering how many fps they were going to be treated to. 10? 15?

Lucas Arts and to a lesser extent Sierra were still making great point & click games, but their time was coming to an end.

Just unearthed a bunch of computer magazines from the period and it's funny how quickly I was recognising an ad for a game, and recalling the publisher's logo be it Gremlin, Psygnosis, etc.

Given that customs can only search up to 2% if containers, and they are still finding $1.4 billion in product, how much is actually getting in? Something drastic needs to be done or these new gangs are going to cause added mayhem. I think we need to be far harder on drug dealers

With the ongoing threat of COVID19 it is probably wise to brush up on practices that will protect you and others from the risk of infection. Dr John Campbell from the UK has been posting ongoing updates on YouTube regarding new research on COVID19 and associated matters. This one from yesterday:

Question Asking for help? This is what we need to know
Posted by: videomonkey - 16-02-2020, 07:21 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (11)

The idea of this category is for people to discuss computing, and to get tech advice on a variety of different topics, from computers and laptops to smartphones and TVs.

To get the best possible help, there's generally a typical list of information that will be needed:

1) What's the problem?
Describe the issue in as much detail as possible, including any error messages. Be specific.
For example: When I open Microsoft Word, it crashes back to the desktop, and I see an error message that says "error 123".

2) What hardware are you using?
Desktop computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc?

3) If your computer has a make and model, what is it?
For example: HP Elitebook 840, or Samsung Galaxy S10

3) What operating system are you using?
Windows 7, Windows 10, Linux, Mac OS, Android, iOS, etc?

5) What program (if any) is causing the issue?
Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Word, etc?

That should be enough info for people to get started on the troubleshooting process.

Feel free to add to this guys Smile
